Cleveland-Each year, the AIDS Taskforce of Greater Cleveland provides an opportunity for northeast Ohio to celebrate the contributions of compassionate individuals and organizations who take the time to make a difference in the HIV and AIDS community with the Voices Against the Silence Awards. Past award recipients have included Dr. Henry Ng, Pastor Doug Horner, the Gay People's Chronicle, Vic Gelb and the late Rep. Stephanie Tubbs-Jones.

This year's recipients will be honored at our annual Voices Against the Silence Award Reception, Friday, December 5 at 2 p.m. at the City Club of Cleveland, 850 Euclid Av-

enue.

is the best defense.

This year, the reception will follow the City Club's World AIDS Day Friday Forum presentation featuring Dr. James Orbinski, former international president of Doctors without Borders and founder of Dignitas International, an organization committed to community-based care for people living with HIV and AIDS in the developing world.

In November, a panel of six judges sifted through a very impressive field of nominees. It was no easy task, but the judges narrowed the field down and decided to present seven awards this year. In no particular order, the 2008 Voices Against the Silence Award recipients are:

• AIDS advocate Gail Anderson

• Dancin' in the Streets organizers David Peifer and John Katsaros

Volunteer and nurse-practitioner Janet

Briggs

• Marilyn Alejandro-Rodriguez of the Center for Reducing Health Disparities at the MetroHealth Medical Center

Medical co-director of the Cleveland Department of Public Health Dr. Ann Avery • HIV educator Halima Grant

• Steve Clapp, president of Christian Community in Fort Wayne, Indiana

An honorary Voices Against the Silence Award will also be presented to Dr. James Orbinski for his fierce and tireless voice against genocide, injustice, and assaults on human dignity.

For more information on the City Club presentation with Dr. Orbinski and the Voices Against the Silence award ceremony, contact Jason Weiner at 216-621-0766, ext. 270 or e-mail jweiner@atfgc.org.
